As per the Book District Gazetteer, Goa is properly known as Gowa or Gova, in marathi Goven, in Konkani Govem. The Madras Glossary connects it with saskrit 'go' a cow in the sense of cow herd country. It is the abbreviation of the term Gomant. the reference to the people know as Gomantas is traced in the (9th canto) of the bhishma parva of Mahabharat Purana. The usually accepted derivation of the term Gomantaka is from go+manta+ka; go meaning cattle, gomanta meaning herd of cattle owners with ka as taddhita affix added to the noun to express (diminus) deterioration and similarly.
Yoga (Sanskrit: Yog) is a group of ancient spiritual practices designed for the purpose of cultivating a steady mind. It originated in India possibly as early as 3300 BCE. A practitioner of Yoga is called a Yogi or Yogini.

Religion has always been deep-seated in the Goan psyche. Goans faiths and beliefs have coalesced in a religious harmony in sometimes syncretic forms, in reverence and respect for each other’s divinities and traditions, though firmly attached to one’s own religious persuasion. It has thus made Goa an oasis of communal peace in the veritable sense and spirit of ‘Sarvadharmasamabhava’ (equal respect for all religions).
These close relationships of Goan’s come often to the fore, especially during feasts and festivals of the Christians and the ‘zatras’ (religious concourse of people) of the Hindus. These two streams of celebrations have a striking similarity to each other in their outward manifestation. For they are linked together by folk traditions of centuries of intimate contact and participated in with enthusiasm by both the major communities of the self same ethnic stock, without abandoning each one’s own sectarian modes of worship.
